FridayFave: An Automatic Watch

AN INTRICATE PIECE

Do you have a watch laying around because it needs a new battery and you just haven’t got around to replacing it. I’m all for things that are easy to maintain and while you’re not changing the battery to a watch every month, even having to change a battery every year or two is a task that could be pushed aside and forgotten. Imagine not having to worry about changing the battery to your watch again. This is why you should consider investing in an automatic watch. No battery changes means saving you time and a few extra bucks. So what exactly is an automatic watch? Keep reading to find out more about this intricate and timeless piece.

WHAT IS AN AUTOMATIC WATCH?

An automatic watch also known as a self-wind watch is a mechanical watch that runs off of motion. These watches do not contain batteries.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The natural movements of your hand or wrist is what powers these types of watch. There is a spring in the watch which is powered by motion. It’s much more complex than that, but that’s the gist of it. When an automatic watch runs out of power reserve, for example from the lack of motion when not worn, it just has to simply be winded or manually wound to get it going again and you’re good to go. You never have to worry about changing a battery and that’s what I absolutely love about it. An automatic watch is so much easier to maintain.

WHAT BRANDS MANUFACTURE AUTOMATIC WATCHES?

Many brands manufacture automatic watches. Automatic watches are produced by brands like Seiko and luxurious brands, like Rolex.

MY AUTOMATIC WATCH

I’ve had my Bulova automatic watch (pictured above) for over 10 years. When I purchased the watch I honestly did not know it was an automatic watch. I purchased it because I thought it was pretty. After looking around at several watches, this one one caught my attention because of the little hearts- yes I am a sucker for these things, but honestly this watch was one of my best purchases. The cost of the watch was around $500. I have another watch I bought after and it’s sitting in my jewelry box because it needs a new battery. I absolutely love my automatic watch and after 10 years, it’s still like new and works perfectly. My watch pictured is no longer available, but I do recommend Bulova (not sponsored) for quality, style and affordability, if you’re thinking of purchasing a watch.

TO CONCLUDE

Wearing a watch is not just a timepiece. It’s also a fashion statement and an accessory that can elevate your look. For women and men alike it’s another way to express your style. If you’re still into wearing a “real” watch and don’t want to deal with the hassle of ever changing a battery or forgo a stylish piece because it’s laying around in need of a battery change, you should definitely consider an automatic watch.
